How to Sit in Stillness: The Lost Art of Taoist Sitting Meditation
Taoist sitting meditation (Zuo Wang) is radically simple — and radically challenging. Here is how to sit in stillness without techniques, mantras, or goals.
There is a Taoist meditation practice so simple that most people dismiss it as 'doing nothing.' Zuo Wang (坐忘) — 'Sitting in Forgetfulness' — is the art of sitting without goal, without technique, without trying to achieve anything.
How to Practice
Sit comfortably. Do not control your breath. Do not clear your mind. Do not focus on anything. Simply sit. When thoughts come, let them pass without engagement. The practice is not about stopping thoughts but about not chasing them. Start with 5 minutes. The paradox of Zuo Wang is that doing nothing is harder than it sounds — but infinitely more rewarding.
