The Taoist Sage: What Does It Mean to Be a Person of the Tao?

The Taoist sage (Sheng Ren) is the ideal human in Taoist philosophy. Here is what their qualities are — and how utterly different they are from Western ideals of success.

If Western culture has the 'self-made man,' Taoism has the Sheng Ren (圣人) — the sage. But the two ideals could not be more different.

The Taoist Sage

A sage is not someone who has achieved external success but someone who has returned to their original nature. The sage is humble, simple, and lives in harmony with the Tao. They do not seek followers or recognition. The Tao Te Ching says: 'The sage has no fixed identity — he makes the people's heart his heart.'
